Remembrance Day (Armistice Day)
November 11 · Level 2 · #1849 of 2238

Remembrance Day recalls the 1918 armistice that stopped fighting on the Western Front in the First World War. Across different countries, it has also become an occasion to remember those who died in later conflicts.
How it is celebrated: people lay wreaths at war memorials and observe periods of silence, often at eleven in the morning. Red remembrance poppies are worn in Britain and several Commonwealth countries.
The armistice took effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. It halted the fighting on that front, but was not itself a peace treaty.
