Polish Independence Day

Polish Independence Day marks the restoration of Poland's statehood in 1918, at the end of the First World War. It remembers the country's return to independence after its territory had been divided among neighbouring powers.

How it is celebrated: white-and-red flags appear on buildings, wreaths are laid at Warsaw's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and cities host concerts and marches. Independence runs also bring amateur runners into the celebrations.

Poland had spent 123 years off Europe's political map as an independent state, following the final partition in 1795.
