Jean Sibelius Day and Day of Finnish Music
December 8 · Level 4 · #1405 of 2238
Finland's day of music honours the composer Jean Sibelius, who was born on 8 December 1865. It is a good excuse to listen to both Finnish classics and the country's newest sounds.
How it is celebrated: concerts take place across Finland, orchestras play Sibelius, and flags are raised on this day. Many programmes include Finlandia, the tone poem from 1899 that became a kind of unofficial second anthem.
Sibelius lived from 1904 in his house Ainola in Järvenpää, which is now a museum you can visit.
