International Day for People of African Descent
August 31 · Level 8 · #543 of 2238
This UN day recognizes the contributions of people of African descent to societies around the world. It also calls attention to racism and discrimination, placing equal dignity, rights and opportunities at the centre of the occasion.
How it is celebrated: cultural events, exhibitions, educational sessions and public discussions explore the history and creativity of African diaspora communities. Participants also share experiences and discuss practical ways to challenge prejudice.
The observance is relatively recent: it was first held in 2021, joining the already established International Decade for People of African Descent.
