Pelmeni Day

Pelmeni Day celebrates a dish that is best made by the whole family: dough wrapped around a meat filling and boiled in water. Pelmeni are especially loved in the Urals and Siberia.
How it is celebrated: people mould pelmeni together, hold contests for the fastest and neatest, and then argue happily about the filling and the dressing: sour cream, butter, vinegar or mustard.
According to a widespread explanation, the word pelmen comes from the Permic languages and means "bread ear", a fitting name for a little boiled dumpling shaped like an ear.
