Battery Day
February 18 · Level 2 · #1803 of 2238
Battery Day reminds us that spent batteries do not belong in ordinary rubbish: they contain metals and chemicals that harm soil and water. They should go to recycling instead.
How it is celebrated: schools, shops and offices put out collection boxes for used batteries, eco volunteers run campaigns and explain where to take them, and children compete to see who collects the most.
The date matches the birthday of the Italian Alessandro Volta, born on 18 February 1745. Around 1800 he built the voltaic pile, the first chemical battery.
