International Asperger's Day

This day is about Asperger syndrome, a developmental difference on the autism spectrum. It exists so that more people understand how those who have it see the world and how to talk with them more comfortably.

How it is celebrated: support groups and clinics hold talks and open meetings, and people share stories and practical tips online. Many simply try to speak more directly and plainly that day, without hints or sarcasm.

The date is the birthday of Hans Asperger, the Austrian paediatrician who gave the syndrome its name; he was born on 18 February 1906. Since 2013, the American DSM-5 manual has folded it into the single diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.
