Remembrance Day for Fallen Submariners

Russia’s remembrance day for fallen submariners honours those who lost their lives at sea and acknowledges the families they left behind. Its date recalls the sinking of the nuclear submarine Komsomolets in the Norwegian Sea in 1989.

How it is celebrated: serving sailors, veterans and relatives gather at memorials, lay flowers and observe moments of silence. Religious services and remembrance meetings also take place.

Before its loss, Komsomolets had reached a depth of 1,027 metres. The submarine’s remarkable engineering history is inseparable from the disaster that killed 42 sailors.
