International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace

This UN observance highlights cooperation and negotiation as ways to address shared problems and prevent conflict. Multilateralism means countries working together through arrangements in which several states take part.

How it is celebrated: meetings, public discussions, lectures and educational events examine diplomacy in practice. Topics include peaceful dispute resolution, international agreements and the institutions that give countries a place to listen to one another.

The observance is relatively young: the UN General Assembly established it in December 2018, and it was first marked in 2019. The principles it celebrates, however, reach back to the UN Charter itself.
