International Youth Solidarity Day
April 24 · Level 8 · #606 of 2238

International Youth Solidarity Day focuses on young people's mutual support, rights and participation in society. Its roots lie in international youth movements and the idea that cooperation can cross national borders.
How it is celebrated: youth organisations arrange meetings, discussions, concerts and public activities. Organisers choose themes such as peace, access to education and opportunities for young people to influence decisions about their future.
The observance has a longer history than its contemporary themes might suggest. The World Federation of Democratic Youth initiated it in 1957; it grew out of organised youth activism rather than the UN's calendar of international days.
