Montenegro Independence Day
May 21 · Level 10 · #164 of 2238

Montenegro Independence Day recalls the referendum of 21 May 2006, in which the country chose to end its union with Serbia and become fully independent.
How it is celebrated: the holiday lasts two days, 21 and 22 May, both of them days off; towns host concerts, fireworks and official ceremonies, and streets fill with flags.
The result was close: about 55.5 per cent voted yes, against a threshold of 55 per cent set with the European Union's mediation.
