Mitten Tree Day
December 6 · Level 1 · #2016 of 2238

On this day winter warmth is shared quite literally: mittens are hung on a tree for people who have none. The name comes from a children's picture book called The Mitten Tree.
How it is celebrated: schools, libraries and churches set up a tree and hang new or hand-knitted mittens, hats and scarves on it. Everything collected is then passed on to children and adults who need it.
In the book by Candace Christiansen, a kind woman named Sarah notices schoolchildren waiting at a bus stop without mittens, so she knits pairs and hangs them on a fir tree.
