Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year is East Asia's great family holiday, the start of a new year in the lunisolar calendar. It goes by many names: Chunjie in China, Tet in Vietnam, Seollal in Korea.

How it is celebrated: families gather for a festive dinner, give the house a thorough clean, hand children red envelopes with money and set off fireworks, while dragon and lion dancers fill the streets.

Before the holiday, China sees chunyun, the mass journey home. Billions of trips by train, plane and car in a few weeks make it one of the largest yearly human migrations on Earth.
