Russian Student Brigades Day
February 17 · Level 8 · #619 of 2238

Student Brigades Day honours young people who spend their holidays working on building sites, farms, trains and in children's camps. For many students a brigade is the first real job and a friendship that lasts for years.
How it is celebrated: current and former members gather at rallies and concerts, put on jackets covered in brigade patches, sing their own songs, and the best are given awards.
The movement began in 1959, when students of the physics faculty of Moscow State University went to work on the virgin lands of Kazakhstan over the summer.
