Kekri in Finland

Kekri is a Finnish celebration of the farming year's end. Once the harvest was safely gathered, households could rest, feast and remember departed relatives. Plenty of food and respect for ancestors were both central to the occasion.

How it is celebrated: people share hearty meals and enjoy folk performances. Traditional celebrations also featured costumed visitors, including a goat-like character who came asking households for treats.

Kekri originally followed the work rather than the calendar. Different farms could celebrate on different days, depending on when their autumn tasks were finished.
