International Day of Medical Physics

This day honours people who bring physics into medicine, from radiation therapy to scanners and ultrasound. It falls on 7 November, the birthday of Marie Curie.

How it is celebrated: professional societies organise talks, and hospitals and labs hold open days where specialists explain how precise calculations help to treat patients.

The day was first marked in 2013, at the initiative of the International Organization for Medical Physics. Marie Curie was born in 1867, and during the First World War she helped equip mobile X-ray units for field hospitals.
