Independence Day of Kazakhstan

Independence Day is Kazakhstan's main national holiday. It marks 16 December 1991, the day the country proclaimed its state independence.

How it is celebrated: there are festive concerts and fireworks, flowers are laid at independence monuments, and state awards go to distinguished citizens. Both 16 and 17 December are days off.

Kazakhstan was the last Soviet republic to declare independence, doing so only days before the Soviet Union formally ceased to exist.
