Conquering Peaks Day

Conquering Peaks Day is for climbers, boulderers and anyone who has ever gone higher than they planned. It is about mountains, but even more about stubbornness and reaching a goal one step at a time.

How it is celebrated: people head out on a hike or to a climbing wall, watch mountain films, swap stories of ascents and recall how scary their first steep climb felt.

The first people to stand on top of Mount Everest, on 29 May 1953, were New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.
