International Students' Day

International Students' Day combines student solidarity with remembrance of Nazi repression in the occupied Czech lands in 1939. It highlights the importance of access to education, academic freedom and the right to speak and organise.

How it is celebrated: student organisations hold discussions, concerts and gatherings, while commemorations honour students who were killed or persecuted. Universities also host conversations about educational opportunity and student rights.

In 1989, a Prague student demonstration marking the anniversary became a pivotal event at the start of Czechoslovakia's Velvet Revolution, giving the date another place in history.
