Black Cat Protection Day
November 17 · Level 1 · #2203 of 2238
Black Cat Protection Day began in Italy as a challenge to superstitions that can put animals at risk. It reminds people that a dark coat is no omen: a black cat needs kindness and a safe home just like any other pet.
How it is celebrated: animal advocates share information and shelter photographs, help cats find homes and invite owners to tell stories about their companions.
The number 17 was chosen with Italian superstition in mind, where it has an unlucky reputation. The occasion brings two supposed sources of bad luck together to challenge both.
