Baklava Day
November 17 · Level 1 · #2063 of 2238

A day for sweet-toothed people to enjoy baklava, a dessert of thin pastry, chopped nuts and syrup. It is loved across the Middle East, the Caucasus, Turkey and the Balkans.
How it is celebrated: people buy a tray from a pastry shop or bake one at home, brushing the pastry layer by layer. It is served with strong tea or coffee and often shared with colleagues so the sweetness goes around.
Gaziantep baklava from Turkey has had protected geographical status in the European Union since 2013. The classic version uses pistachios, and a single piece can hold dozens of paper-thin layers.
