International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action
April 4 · Level 9 · #441 of 2238

This UN observance draws attention to landmines and other explosive hazards that threaten communities long after fighting ends. It supports accident prevention, clearance work and assistance for people whose lives have been changed by these weapons.
How it is celebrated: organisations hold safety education sessions, exhibitions and discussions with humanitarian workers. Campaigns explain how clearance makes land usable again and why survivors need rehabilitation and opportunities to rebuild independent lives.
Mine action reaches well beyond finding and removing explosives. It also includes risk education, victim assistance and the destruction of stockpiles, so much of the work happens away from a minefield.
