World Intellectual Property Day

World Intellectual Property Day explores the connection between creative work, inventions, brands and the rights associated with them. Established by the World Intellectual Property Organization, it invites a wider audience into a subject that shapes both culture and innovation.

How it is celebrated: events include invention exhibitions, talks and discussions with creators and entrepreneurs. Universities and specialist organisations use everyday examples to explain patents, copyright and trademarks.

The date has its own origin story: the convention establishing WIPO entered into force on 26 April 1970. The organisation created the international observance thirty years later, in 2000.
