International Everest Day
May 29 · Level 10 · #222 of 2238

This day recalls the first confirmed climb of the world's highest mountain. On 29 May 1953, Edmund Hillary and the Sherpa climber Tenzing Norgay stood on the summit of Everest.
How it is celebrated: climbers, Sherpas and mountain lovers swap stories of their expeditions, and in Nepal there are ceremonies and gatherings honouring those who have reached the top.
Everest has three names. Nepalis call it Sagarmatha, Tibetans call it Chomolungma, and the name used worldwide honours the British surveyor George Everest. After a joint survey by Nepal and China in 2020, its height was set at 8,848.86 metres.
