International Day of Peaceful Coexistence

This day is built on a simple idea: people of different beliefs, languages and traditions can live side by side without hostility. It reminds us that peace starts with respect for the neighbours next door.

How it is celebrated: schools and community groups hold open lessons and meetings where people from different cultures get to know each other. Many people simply invite a neighbour over for tea or a shared meal.

The preamble of the UN Charter speaks of practising tolerance and living together in peace with one another as good neighbours.
