Fisherman's Day in Russia

Fisherman's Day brings together Russia's fishing industry and people who simply enjoy a quiet hour with a rod. In fishing towns, it also celebrates families whose lives revolve around harbours, rivers and boats coming home.

How it is celebrated: communities hold angling contests, concerts and gatherings honouring industry veterans. Fish dishes and ukha, a traditional fish soup, feature at celebrations, alongside plenty of stories about memorable catches.

The Soviet Union established the holiday in 1965 and assigned it to the second Sunday in July. Its calendar date changes, but its place in the weekend stays put.
