Russian Space Forces Day
October 4 · Level 10 · #122 of 2238
Russian Space Forces Day honours the military personnel and specialists behind the country's military space operations. Their work includes operating spacecraft, monitoring activity in orbit and providing warning of missile attacks.
How it is celebrated: military units hold ceremonies, present awards and welcome veterans. Museums and educational institutions explore the history of space launches and the people responsible for keeping space systems working.
The occasion marks the anniversary of the first artificial satellite's launch in 1957. Sputnik's distinctive radio beeps became one of the earliest sounds associated with the space age.
