Christmas Card Day
December 9 · Level 3 · #1719 of 2238
This is a day for warm winter wishes on paper, the kind that arrive in a letterbox instead of a chat window. The Christmas card became the symbol of festive correspondence.
How it is celebrated: people choose cards, sign them by hand and post them to friends and family, giving recipients something nicer than bills to find on the doormat. Many also string up the cards they receive on a ribbon or on the wall.
The first commercial Christmas card was commissioned in London in 1843 by Henry Cole and illustrated by the artist John Callcott Horsley.
