Aleksis Kivi Day, Finnish Literature Day
October 10 · Level 1 · #2115 of 2238

Finland marks the birthday of Aleksis Kivi, its national writer, as Finnish Literature Day. It is a nudge to remember the author and pick up a book written in the national language.
How it is celebrated: flags go up across the country, libraries and schools host readings and exhibitions, and plenty of Finns pull Seven Brothers off the shelf again.
Kivi was born on 10 October 1834 in Nurmijärvi and lived only 38 years. His novel Seven Brothers began to appear in instalments in 1870.
