World Thalassaemia Day
May 8 · Level 3 · #1696 of 2238

Thalassaemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body struggles to make normal haemoglobin. This day reminds people that carriers can be identified early and that patients need accessible treatment and support.
How it is celebrated: patient groups, doctors and volunteers hold awareness events, talks, family meetings and blood donation drives, since many patients depend on regular transfusions.
The date honours Panos Englezos, who lived with thalassaemia and died of it. His father, George Englezos, led the Thalassaemia International Federation.
