Remembrance and Reconciliation Days for Second World War Victims

On 8 and 9 May the United Nations invites the world to remember everyone who died in the Second World War and to keep working for reconciliation. The General Assembly set these days aside in 2004.

How it is celebrated: with minutes of silence, wreaths at memorials and commemorative gatherings; in Ukraine people also pin on a red poppy.

There are two dates because of time zones: Germany's surrender act was signed in Berlin-Karlshorst late on 8 May Central European time, when it was already 9 May in Moscow.
