World Senior Citizens Day

This is a day to thank older people for their experience, patience and family stories. It reminds us that respect and care for the elderly make a community warmer.

How it is celebrated: families share a meal, grandchildren call or visit their grandparents, and senior clubs and community centres hold concerts, tea parties and get-togethers. Many people simply ask an elder to tell a story from their youth and write it down.

In the United States the date became official in 1988, when President Ronald Reagan proclaimed National Senior Citizens Day. The United Nations marks its own International Day of Older Persons separately, on 1 October.
