This day is for people who dream up their own ventures, take risks and create jobs for others. It is a reminder that behind every company stands somebody's bold idea.
How it is celebrated: forums, networking evenings, mentoring sessions and start-up pitch contests are held, experienced founders share what they have learned, and friends and colleagues cheer on anyone launching a new business.
According to World Bank estimates, small and medium-sized enterprises make up about nine out of ten companies worldwide and provide more than half of all jobs.
