World Refugee Day

This day is about people who had to leave home because of war, persecution or violence. It honours their courage and reminds everyone that refugees add a great deal to the communities that take them in.

How it is celebrated: aid organisations and local groups hold exhibitions, open meetings, fundraisers and concerts where refugees share their stories and the music of their home countries. Many cities also host shared meals and friendly sports tournaments.

The UN General Assembly set up the day in 2000, and it was first marked in 2001, on the 50th anniversary of the Refugee Convention. Before that, 20 June had already been observed as Africa Refugee Day.
