World Elephant Protection Day in Zoos
June 20 · Level 6 · #1043 of 2238

This day looks at how elephants live in zoos and what can be done to make their lives better. It is a reminder that zoos are responsible both for the animals in their care and for the survival of the species in the wild.
How it is celebrated: zoos tell visitors about elephant behaviour and the work of keepers, show how the animals are kept busy with food puzzles and well-designed enclosures, and raise money for protecting elephants in the wild. School groups often get special tours.
The African savanna elephant is the largest land animal alive today, and an elephant herd is led by an experienced female, usually called the matriarch.
