World Population Day
July 11 · Level 7 · #758 of 2238
An international date that reminds us that behind the number of people on the planet lie questions of health, education, equality and sustainable development. It is a chance to talk about how we all share one Earth.
How it is celebrated: schools and organisations hold lectures and panel discussions, new population figures are published, and campaigners raise topics such as access to healthcare and women's rights. Each year has its own theme.
The day was established in 1989 by the governing body of the UN Development Programme, inspired by Five Billion Day on 11 July 1987. By UN estimates, humanity passed eight billion in November 2022.
