World Poetry Day

World Poetry Day celebrates verse as a way to share feelings, experiences and ideas across generations. Established by UNESCO in 1999, it encourages people to read, write, publish and teach poetry while supporting linguistic diversity.

How it is celebrated: libraries, schools and arts venues host readings, author visits and poetry evenings. Some events bring several languages together, letting listeners hear how a poem changes in translation.

This literary occasion also has a language-preservation mission: UNESCO specifically links it to giving endangered languages more opportunities to be heard.
