World Photography Day

World Photography Day celebrates the craft of making pictures and the stories they preserve. From family snapshots to documentary images, photographs let us revisit a moment or notice something we might otherwise have missed. A phone camera is enough to join in.

How it is celebrated: photographers share favourite images, organise exhibitions and lead photo walks or workshops. Museums and photography groups also introduce historical techniques and encourage people to experiment.

The date marks the public disclosure of the daguerreotype process in France in 1839. A daguerreotype produced a unique image on a metal plate, with no negative from which to print copies.
