Frontline Dog Day

Russia's Frontline Dog Day remembers dogs that served during wartime and the handlers who worked beside them. These animals located mines, carried messages and helped evacuate wounded people, making a contribution that often meant the difference between life and death.

How it is celebrated: museums hold commemorative events and tell the stories of military dog teams. Exhibitions and working-dog demonstrations introduce visitors to the skills behind that partnership.

During the Second World War, Soviet forces used dog teams to transport wounded soldiers and supplies. The dogs pulled sledges or wheeled carts depending on the season, taking their work well beyond tracking scents.
