World Humanitarian Day

World Humanitarian Day honours people who bring food, shelter and other essential support to communities facing war or disaster. It also remembers aid workers who have lost their lives and draws attention to the people still waiting for help.

How it is celebrated: aid organisations share stories from their work, run public campaigns and raise funds. Commemorations honour colleagues who died, while advocacy campaigns call for civilians and humanitarian workers to be protected.

The date recalls the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad. It killed 22 people, including UN Special Representative Sérgio Vieira de Mello.
