World Peatlands Day
June 2 · Level 7 · #888 of 2238
A day to remember that bogs and fens are far from wasteland: they are a vital part of the planet's climate system. Peatlands store carbon, filter water and shelter rare plants and animals.
How it is celebrated: conservationists lead boardwalk walks, talks and online meetings, and volunteers join projects to restore drained peatlands. Schools explain why wet peat is the best fire protection.
Peatlands cover only about 3% of the world's land, yet they hold more carbon than all the world's forests combined. When drained, peat releases that carbon back into the air and burns easily.
