International Sex Workers' Day

A day that draws attention to the rights, safety and dignity of people working in the sex industry. The main themes are protection from violence, access to healthcare and an end to discrimination.

How it is celebrated: advocacy groups and community organisations hold meetings, demonstrations and discussions, where workers speak about their conditions and call for legal protection. Views on the topic differ widely between countries, and the debate is open.

The date goes back to 2 June 1975, when sex workers in Lyon, France, occupied the church of Saint-Nizier to protest police harassment and violence. Police cleared the church some days later.
