World Olive Tree Day

This day celebrates the olive tree, a long-standing symbol of peace, longevity and Mediterranean life. It highlights how much olive groves mean for nature, farming and the traditions of many peoples.

How it is celebrated: in olive-growing regions people hold oil tastings, walks through the groves and family lunches, while schoolchildren and volunteers plant young trees. Museums and local communities share the story of olive cultivation.

UNESCO's General Conference proclaimed 26 November as World Olive Tree Day in 2019. Olive trees can live for centuries, and some ancient Mediterranean specimens are estimated to be more than a thousand years old.
