World Morse Code Day

World Morse Code Day celebrates the signalling system that turns letters into dots and dashes. It falls on the birthday of Samuel Morse, who was born on 27 April 1791.

How it is celebrated: amateur radio operators go on air and tap out messages on their keys, beginners practise with code charts, and friends send each other short notes with a torch or by knocking on the table.

In 1844 Morse sent the official opening message along the telegraph line from Washington to Baltimore: "What hath God wrought".
