World Microbiome Day

World Microbiome Day is about the bacteria, fungi and viruses that live in our bodies, in soil, in water and in our food. It is a reminder that these tiny neighbours shape human health and the world around us.

How it is celebrated: researchers and universities hold talks and online meetings, labs share what they are studying, and doctors and science communicators explain how diet and lifestyle affect the microbes we carry.

The Dutch scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was the first to see microbes. In the 17th century he even examined the plaque on his own teeth under his homemade microscopes and described the "little animals" he found.
