World Cities Day puts everyday urban life in the spotlight: homes people can afford, reliable transport and public spaces that welcome everyone. It encourages cities to share ways of making neighbourhoods safer, more inclusive and better prepared for environmental challenges.
How it is celebrated: communities and city authorities hold discussions, exhibitions and events about urban development. Residents, planners and researchers exchange ideas for improving streets, housing and shared spaces.
Cities have a goal of their own in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 11 focuses on sustainable cities and communities.
