Karva Chauth in India

Karva Chauth is a Hindu observance especially associated with northern India. Many married women fast from sunrise until moonrise, praying for their husbands' wellbeing and long lives.

How it is celebrated: women wear festive clothes, decorate their hands with mehndi and gather for prayers and traditional stories. In many families, the evening ritual includes viewing the moon through a sieve, then looking at the husband before breaking the fast.

In some northern Indian traditions, the day begins with sargi, a meal eaten before dawn. It is traditionally prepared or provided by the mother-in-law, giving her a special role in the observance.
