Vardanants Day
February 12 · Level 4 · #1564 of 2238
Vardanants Day honours Vardan Mamikonian and his companions in the Armenian Apostolic Church. Their resistance at the Battle of Avarayr in 451 became a lasting expression of commitment to Christianity and the freedom to keep one's faith.
How it is celebrated: worshippers attend a festive liturgy and remember those who died. Armenian communities also hold commemorative gatherings and introduce younger generations to the story behind the observance.
The Armenian army did not win the battle. Yet the resistance became a symbol of spiritual victory, giving a military defeat an enduring place in Armenian religious memory.
