Masopust — Czech Carnival
February 12 · Level 8 · #598 of 2238

Masopust is the Czech carnival tradition of feasting and dressing up before Lent. It brings neighbours together for music, playful performances and rich food before the fasting season begins, with customs that vary from village to village.
How it is celebrated: masked participants and musicians visit houses, dance for their hosts and receive refreshments. Pork, sausages and sweet doughnuts feature among the treats, while some villages preserve a specific cast of characters and procession order.
The Shrovetide door-to-door processions in villages of the Hlinecko area are recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. The recognition honours these particular community traditions.
