Unknown Soldier Day in Russia
December 3 · Level 6 · #1050 of 2238

A day of remembrance for soldiers who died in war and were never identified. In Russia it is a moment to thank those whose names were lost, yet whose sacrifice is remembered.
How it is celebrated: people bring flowers and wreaths to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Garden beside the Kremlin wall. There are ceremonies with servicemen and veterans, and volunteer search teams talk about their work finding and naming the fallen.
The date goes back to 3 December 1966, when the remains of an unknown soldier were moved to the Kremlin wall on the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Moscow. The monument bears words by the poet Sergey Mikhalkov: "Your name is unknown, your deed is immortal."
